Diane was incredibly rude and unprofessional. I came to pick up a patient & was forced to stand outside of the building. No one would talk to me. I found out that I was not let into the building because I was wearing a tank top, on a hot day?? Petty & rude, she had no right or place to judge & decide that since I was showing my shoulders, I didn't deserve to stand in the air conditioned building. Petty & rude, she had no right or place to judge & decide that since I was showing my shoulders, I didn't deserve to stand in the air conditioned building. When I was eventually let in, she made me stand in the corner like I had done something "wrong" as a GROWN ADULT. I couldn't imagine how she treats her patients. I wouldn't recommend this entire place to anyone.

Horrific. . The counselors don’t know anything about alcoholism or drug addiction except what they read in books. Most of the day all the patients are kept in a day room. I didn’t know some of the information so I said I would ask the nurse and call them back. After I hung up I went to the nurses station and asked for a listing of my medications. The nurse said to me and yes this is a direct quote “we don’t have to let you go. We don’t ever have to let you go. We can have you court ordered in here and move you around this system as long as we want.” I believe her. It is a horrible place and I can’t imagine going back. Since then I have needed help. I went to Lakeside Behavioral Health Center. The staff are all in recovery. They understand the workings of alcoholics and drug addicts. The difference was night and day.

My 16-year-old daughter was hospitalized here for 10 days last fall. All their doctors are INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS. This means essentially they have no authority regularly monitoring how they treat the patients. After seeing my daughter for 30 minutes, this doctor decided to put my daughter on a strong mood stabilizer and 400 mg of Seroquel. She came home drugged up and like a zombie. They also don’t let them do any schoolwork, claiming that “they need to concentrate on getting better,” so they give them coloring books and keep them bored out of their minds. With teenagers who already have mental health problems, that is just a recipe for disaster. Some of the staff were good, but others thought my daughter was faking pseudo-seizures that she’d had off and on since February and that were verified by Le Bonheur Neurology. The real kicker was that the doctor, who’d seen my daughter for a total of an hour during the 10 days she was there, first decided to extend her stay by 3-4 days, and then referred her to an intensive outpatient program that was going to cost more than the actual hospitalization. The nurse I spoke with said I was the 4th or 5th parent to call about that doctor doing that without even discussing it with the parent. The nurse said she needed to talk to someone about him. It really seemed like the guy was getting kickbacks from the outpatient program. My daughter is currently in another hospital in Tupelo, MS, and she says it is better than Parkwood in every way.

after getting past the waiting room i was put in a tiny room with almost nothing in it. i have adhd. i was confined to a chair stairing at a wall. it was honestly awful. for me 30 minutes feels like 5 hours in that environment. i had started to wish i didn’t say anything at all.
the day before i was admitted i got acrylic nails. once i was in i was forced to pry a fresh set of chop shop nails off of my very real and pain feeling nails. (the fake nails were not sharp) no and, ifs, or buts about how i felt. $80 down the drain.
i get sinus infections almost every other month. i had one when i went and i was forced to be swabbed for covid, which is understandable at the time. after that i was put on a different unit completely by myself. there was NO ONE but a sitter. there was a tv, but the sitter felt entitled to be entertained because she had to sit with me for a couple hours. never once did she ask did i want to choose something to watch. because of that i laid in bed and stared at a wall for THREE DAYS STRAIGHT. i had nothing but the clothes i had on. i couldn’t even shower. the only thing i had to look forward too was eating and using the bathroom. also, once they brought me my food i stared at a wall. table against wall, my chair facing it. i never had covid and somehow my vintage tommy hilfiger sweatshirt came up missing on a unit that no other patient was on but me. i wore it for those three days because i was left to think my parents didn’t bring me clothes or toiletries. the day i left the “covid” unit it went missing.
once i got back into the adolescent unit i got to talk to my parents and they told me that they did drop off my things. i was also on my period so i needed my tampons. i was 17 at the time and there was a girl who had the same name but was 12, a different race, AND HADNT EVEN HAD HER FIRST PERIOD. i noticed the tampons in her cubby and asked if she started and she said no. i asked why she didn’t question why she has two of everything. how did the staff allow this, it was their fault. i was in the same clothes for three days, no shower, severely depressed, and isolated.
since i had been through the experience before, i asked why they hadn’t taken my blood and urine. they claimed they did. (literally why would i lie?) and then i realized they had taken the little girls twice. she didn’t know any better. i had a 12 year old girl’s vitals on my chart. i was the one that had to ask her and figure out for myself what went wrong.
forced to do push ups in gym like i was in the military, random little kids in the corner of the gym during activities because they didn’t have their own day room, i could go on and on. the last thing i will say is how hard it is not feel depressed in that building. the color scheme is maroon and brown. the day room had no windows, besides the door. it was stale and cold. i felt like a prisoner.

The food was good, but the cafeteria was freezing. The patients helped me way more than the staff did. They threaten to strip search you all the time. I lied on my day sheet several times so I would be released early. Loved the other patients, hated the staff. Also, you can only call your parents for 5 minutes every two days. Ridiculous. Do better. Also, your beds are covered in bed bugs and the pillow is nom existent.

I think if anyone is struggling with anxiety and or depression this is a great place to start the process of healing. Every staff member that I seen was so supportive and kind no one was judging, I really felt like they were there to help and support me so I could get better and live my best life.

Only review I've ever left in my life. My fiancee and I went here two night ago. We were referred by urgent care to get her medication refilled. Basic anti depression medication that she ran out of.
We got there and waited for about 2 hours with no information given on when she would be seen. Fine. Pretty normal doctor visit type annoyance. After hour 2 I asked the front desk worker when we'd be seen. He said he'd check in a moment. Another 20 minutes or so pass by, and my fiancee and I agre...

We got there and waited for about 2 hours with no information given on when she would be seen. Fine. Pretty normal doctor visit type annoyance. After hour 2 I asked the front desk worker when we'd be seen. He said he'd check in a moment. Another 20 minutes or so pass by, and my fiancee and I agree it's probably best to just take off and try again the next day. Mind you, the exit doors are locked to prevent... Well, I'm not sure actually. Not 100% sure how the exit doors in the waiting room can legally be locked.
I go to the front desk worker again, only this time I let him know we're going to leave and come back tomorrow. He said he'd let his supervisor know. Let his supervisor know we decided to leave? We were there for a new prescription, not to check her in to this facility. She was not a threat to herself or anyone around her, and the assessment she filled out did not imply either of those things.
Another half an hour or so, and one of the other people checking in (who had been waiting for about 10 hours, mind you) started throwing a fit to be let out. Again... this is a WAITING ROOM. We are not checked in to this psych ward. We are literally just sitting in the waiting room. None of us could leave (except for those who could, which seemed incredibly selective and arbitrary) EX: One person was able to leave to hit their vape, but another couldn't step out to smoke a cigarette.
After the third time I officially realized we were trapped in this facility. I'm sorry, is this One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest? How are me and my fiancee trapped in this waiting room, unable to leave, when all she needed was a basic consultation and prescription? In what way is that legal? Well my conclusion is that it is NOT legal.
My solution was to wait for a new group of people to come inside, and slip out when they open the door. It worked! We left, only to be followed by several nurses and security who I can only guess were trying to get us to stay. My fiancee ended up running into one of the other people there that night, who applauded her for leaving and said "when they chased after you we officially knew we couldn't leave."
I am a strong advocate for mental health. I spent a few days in a mental health facility last year, and though the behavior techs were pretty unprofessional the experience did help me. I want people to seek the help they need, and not let stigmas or fears prevent them from doing so. So believe me, when I say to experience something this anxiety-inducing, unprofessional, and downright criminal, will forever make me rethink institutions such as this. It's a shame. Mental health treatment should be a compassionate, fair, and respectful situation. Everyone in the waiting room at Parkwood Behavioral Health was on edge, angry, and hopeless. I wasn't even there as a patient and I felt trapped and helpless.
Do yourself a favor and shop around for mental health. Make an appointment with a proper psychiatrist. And if you see doors that lock in the WAITING ROOM, turn the other way. Get the help you need, and get it somewhere that isn't here.
Oh, and to the lowly paid Behavior Tech or Intern reading this from Parkwood. Maybe consider working somewhere you can actually make a difference, and when you inevitably respond with "I'm so sorry you had this experience. Know we are doing all we can to help people, and we take your comments very seriously" that I don't care. Don't trap people, and don't make excuses. Do better.
