Neurodivergent? Gender non-conforming? Then move along, you're not welcome here. I showed up, naive, miserable, and so eager to engage with the program that numerous staff commented on it. 6 weeks, a new mortgage, and every ounce of savings later, what do I have to show for it? A misdiagnosis that would haunt me for years, a recommendation to an actually competent program, and lots of new debts.

What can you expect at Menninger Clinic?
Pros:
-Comfortable facilities
-Decent meal options
Cons:
-Staff unwilling to respect chosen name/pronouns
-Homophobic staff that will take away TV privileges for watching a tame movie about *gasp* homosexuals!?!
-A treatment team with no regard for you and your needs
-A cookie cutter treatment program with absolutely no room for personalized care
-A philosophy that actively discourages inclusion/development of an external support network
-An attitude of superiority shared by all Members of staff I interacted with
More money than you know how to spend? Need somewhere to put your embarrassment of a child for a few months? Then check out this great opportunity! Want to actually improve your mental well being? Then I would suggest a hard pass unless you want to waste time and resources that could be used on actual treatment.
Here's some exciting things you can expect based on my own time as a patient:
-A complete misunserstanding of meditation and mindfulness in general
-Regular classes that give even the most underfunded public schools a run for their money
-Large concrete walls that keep out any unwanted publicity of your family's "little secret"
-A patient handbook last updated around the turn of the century. Need someone to tell you the expectations and rules? Too bad!
-Personal care perfect for crushing your last remnants of self esteem
-Respect (😂 sorry, couldn't get through this one with a straight face. Menninger Clinic only respects their back accounts)
-As many as 3 hours of treatment per day, wow!
-Refusal to provide any continuing care recommendations unless you finish their arbitrarily long program
-A well earned mistrust of numerous proven treatment methods based on their gross misapplication
All jokes aside, do not attend the Menninger Clinic if you want to improve. 3 years later, and I think I've finally worked through the trauma associated with my experiences at the Menninger Clinic. I can see the remnants of what was probably once a great program, but it's long since degraded into a public school counselor level of care. That's not even an exaggeration, at least my old school counselor had a net 0 impact, I genuinely believe Menninger Clinic set my treatment goals back by years. I still have flashbacks to red faced staff yelling at me for things that, as an undiagnosed autistic person, I didn't understand. You'd think the medical professionals would've noticed, having observed me 24/7 for 6 weeks in both a clinical and miliue environment, but I suppose a misdiagnosis that led me in the total wrong direction for years is the best I could hope for *apparently*. Menninger Clinic led me to mistrust proven treatment methods by applying them with all the grace of someone who took a weekend course at the learning annex. Personally and wholeheartedly, I believe a society that respected mental health would shut this facility down for patient abuse. But alas, we don't live in that society so predatory organizations like the Menninger Clinic are allowed to prey upon the sick and helpless.
Closing thoughts:
Menninger Clinic does not wish to help you.
Menninger Clinic does not respect you.
Menninger Clinic does not take responsibility for the damage they cause.
Menninger Clinic does not see you as a person.
Menninger Clinic is a predator, draining the life and money out of the poor saps who assume their reputation is deserved.
I'm writing this, years later, at recommendation of a REAL therapist, to help me find closure on this miserable chapter of my life. My time at Menninger Clinic has far reaching implications that damaged my faith in the mental health profession

I was in the Adolescent Treatment Program in 2020 when I was 13. I have been to multiple treatment centers and I am very familiar with the mental health industry. I was in the Adolescent Treatment Program in 2020 when I was 13. I have been to multiple treatment centers and I am very familiar with the mental health industry. Menninger is the best place I’ve ever been to. They didn’t help me, but they didn’t cause me any harm. Considering the current state of youth inpatient treatment in America, any treatment center that doesn’t actively abuse children is automatically one of the best. I do not recommend inpatient care for any child, but if it is truly the only option, Menninger is the place for your child. Here is some stuff about my experience:
- We had unrestricted access to the internet. This was very successful in diminishing the feelings of isolation that come with living in an institution.
- We had unsupervised access to flip phones. Unlike most facilities, we were allowed to call friends, not just immediate family members. They never restricted phone calls as a punishment. At other facilities, dangerous situations would arise and I would have no way of reaching out for help. Access to a cell phone made me feel much safer because I knew I could call emergency services if I needed to.
- They did not monitor conversations or peer relationships. In many inpatient programs, children are prohibited from “making friends” with their peers. This was not the case at Menninger. We were even allowed to share phone numbers so we could stay in touch.
- The staff left us alone. They were not constantly micromanaging or controlling our behavior. However, the lack of staff involvement could become problematic when you need help or comfort from an adult. If you asked for help, you were typically ignored or verbally berated. The staff were very unkind.
- Unlike most lockdown treatment centers, the patients at Menninger are not violent.
- They were unable to accommodate my food allergies or sensory needs. Thankfully, my parents were allowed to send me my own snacks that I ate instead of meals.
- Menninger does not utilize behavior modification therapy. Unlike most facilities, we were not forced to work a level system for basic human rights.
- Unlike most hospitals, Menninger does not look like a prison. The patient rooms look like bedrooms, not prison cells. We got our own bathrooms.
- They do not utilize patient wristbands. In most programs, your wristband is essentially proof the institution owns you. This was not the case at Menninger.
- The doctors were incredibly rude and apathetic.
- They overmedicate children. Everyone on my unit was taking 50mg of hydroxyzine at least twice per day. Some patients, like myself, were also prescribed a variety of antipsychotic medications. Thankfully, they do not punish patients if they do not comply with medication regimens, however, most children on the ATP unit are too young to understand they shouldn’t be accepting the drugs.
- Their program is entirely based in DBT. DBT can be incredibly harmful to neurodivergent kids and kids with complex/comorbid diagnostic profiles, including myself. I was shamed because DBT didn’t work for me and told I wasn’t trying; in reality, DBT was simply unable to treat my complex issues.
- There is no academic support. The morning “school” has absolutely no structure. This was highly problematic as some kids spent months on the ATP unit with no academic supplementation.
- Very little individual therapy. I wasn’t assigned an individual therapist until the week before I left. Lots of kids didn’t get a therapist at all.
- Menninger sends children to various abusive institutions after they complete the Adolescent Treatment Program. From what I’ve heard, Menninger is aware of this and is actively working with anti-TTI organizations to decrease the number of children they send into the TTI. I am unsure of the progress they’ve made or if they are making progress at all.

There were fun activities and you could even go on outings I felt very safe and supported in this environment highly recommend this place!! It’s pricy but worth it.

This place is great. Their doctors - the best, apparently - pressured my best friend to be social and join the community of patients. He hated it, resisted. They wouldn't allow him back into his room. Then they said he could go. So he hung himself. Fearing a lawsuit they ceased communication, ghosted. Top notch, classy.

Paid for what we thought was the best sent our child off premises for drug testing. Purchased urine! We got the negative results. Quite a set back!

I honestly don’t know how this place could be rated poorly, at least not on the reception, operator, admission staff, or adolescent day program php personnel. I was desperate for my child when I was given the recommendation to come here. I was desperate for my child when I was given the recommendation to come here. I’ll admit some of these reviews scared me (we have had several bad experiences) which is why I feel it is so important that I write this review. I cannot thank the staff enough for the care that they gave my child. In a few short weeks my child is so much more positive about their life than I have seen in a long time. The staff helped to reduce unnecessary meds as I requested as new coping methods were learned. Every single staff member that I have come in contact were professional and caring. Yes this place may cost more than some of the alternatives but as the old adage says you get what you pay for and when your child’s life is on the line that was the last of my concerns. However, it was not a waste and was money well spent. My child is ready to face the next step of the healing process and we have more peace than we have had in a long time. We have Menninger to thank for that. If you are looking for a place for your troubled child to begin healing I cannot recommend the staff at Menninger enough. Thank you, we will miss you all but will never forget what you did for our family!

Note***RESPONSE TO MENNINGERS RESPONSE AT THE BOTTOM***This place is lauded as one of the top psychiatric facilities in the US. Point blank it does not live up to its name. Their administration is systematically infiltrated with people who have no concern for compassion, attention to detail, or amelioration in their craft. I came here at the repeated praise of 2 of my providers and I wish I had not listened to them. I came to Menninger to resolve trauma, but instead they created more. I strongly advise anyone who has the resources to attend this program, to seek further opinions and options. Written with sincerity, in the hopes that further patients, being innately vulnerable as a setting like this requires, protect themselves from the incompetency and callous behavior of Menninger.
Response to Menninger’s reply to please contact their patient advocacy team: the PA team has a policy of hearing your complaint within 4 hours! By the time I discharged, 5 days after my initial complaint, 4 voicemails, and 2 emails from staff, I HAD STILL not been contacted by the PA team. That is patient ABANDONMENT. After ONE AND A HALF WEEK, after my initial phone call, and 7 voicemails later, with escalation, I FINALLY received contact from the PA team. If you go here, please be wary, their affectation of patient concern is laughable, and extends only so far as they perceive you as a liability. ONCE AGAIN, please, please please, do not come here. Some of the clinical team is undoubtedly amazing, but it’s not worth the 80% of the rude, incompetent, gaslighting behavior you will find at Menninger. I have a deep, visceral, and guttural disgust for the way Menninger treats it’s patients
note**I have also filed a complaint with the Texas department of health, disabilities of texas, the texas medical board, and the texas board of nursing. Please protect and advocate for yourself if you choose to go to Menninger, all the best.

No. They really tore apart my family relations and made my mental health worse. They illegally forced medication on me after I told them it gave me bad side effects. When I asked what symptoms they are treating me for they laughed at me and said I'm delusional because I'm rubbed my chin for about 3 seconds. They said that was delusional because I didn't have 'thick facial hair' so i shouldn't be rubbing my chin (???) so therefore I am delusional. Never had anyone say I was crazy and didn't have any hallucinations but got diagnosed crazy and they just lied to my parents about things I said. I came in there for depression/anxiety but they forced antipsychotics in my private parts that made my anxiety 10x worse without consent. Seen plenty of psychiatrists since and they were confused why they thought i was 'crazy' as well.
