Upon entering the ER I was greeted by really nice and kind people. After the check in process I waited in this room with others who were waiting to see the pharmacist and waiting for a bed. Upon waiting, I wasn’t feeling well and they tested me for COVID in which I came back positive. I was there for severe anxiety and panic disorder, so mind you, when I came back positive I started freaking out and panicking. But, the nurses and staff helped me so much as all this was still going on in the process of waiting for my bed. So they moved me into another room away from everyone else. They were able to calm me down with some medication and then I was finally moved to the Kent Unit where I received treatment and saw the doctor every day while in quarantine for 10 days. During those 10 days there were very few nurses who were actually helpful. Most of them seem like they hate their job and lack empathy. But, there are a few who were super nice, super empathetic, and catered to my needs even in the midst of other patients. Also, the people that do checks are nice as well. I think the rooms are comfortable, the bathroom is comfortable. The psychiatrist was okay, but my experience could’ve been a bit better in regards to a more knowledgeable psychiatrist and more empathetic people.

It had been 8 years since my last stay at Butler and I was afraid that it wouldn’t be up to the same standards as it used to be. But it definitely was, with just a few exceptions. The PAS experience was much improved- kinder and more attentive staff and a much shorter wait to be transferred to the unit. For the most part the care was good to excellent. Of course there’s always a few that need a major attitude adjustment but then that’s the same way anyplace. The two things that were a bit neg...

The PAS experience was much improved- kinder and more attentive staff and a much shorter wait to be transferred to the unit. For the most part the care was good to excellent. Of course there’s always a few that need a major attitude adjustment but then that’s the same way anyplace. The two things that were a bit negative were, the food. It used to be good but it is really awful now. Budget cuts I assume. The biggest and most bothersome issue is the horrible changes in the belongings policy. I understand the problem of people bringing in contraband but the policy is just ridiculous and absurd. I brought 4 sets of clothes and 1 nightgown and underwear. It took 24 hours before I got anything. And then I got back 6 things- none of which matched and all rolled up into a ball and wrinkled. I had had them neatly folded. It told me that they didn’t care or respect my belongings. I did not get my nightgown nor my underwear! I couldn’t have a book that I had brought or any of my toiletries. I was extremely upset about this and I honestly don’t believe that it needs to be quite that restrictive. The doctor was ok and the social worker was wonderful! When I was discharged and got my belongings back I was really angry that they had stuck a sticker with my name on the back of my phone. I was unable to get it off completely and have had to buy a new case. Very disrespectful. So all in all, things were pretty much as they were before. I was reasonably comfortable and well taken care of. So yes- Butler is in my opinion still the best place to be when you need psychiatric help. Don’t hesitate to go there. Thank you.

Despite the usual wear and tear of any medical or public facility, the staff at Butler Hospital is definitely some of the best I've seen. They are very kind, personable, knowledgeable and understanding of the human plight.
They understand not everyone comes here of their own accord. They know how to treat those who are suffering.
I thoroughly appreciated the staff and how taken care of they made me feel. This is the place to go if you are struggling with mental health or addiction.

This review is for the billing department. I set up automatic pay with them multiple times. Received confirmation email. Thought it was all set. Did this a few times. I was told some sort of glitch on their end. Received notice they sent me to collections. I heard they were an awful department at this hospital. Unorganized and such. They lived up to their reputation.

I have been here several times. I went through their ECT program once. Unfortunately all it did was make my short term memory worse.
In-patient most of time as I was into suicidal attempts and self harm. I was sent there by ambulance from Miriam Hospital. I got off the stretcher at the door and walked through the metal detector to a large lobby with comfortable soft couches and small private interview rooms off the main lobby.

They pass a metal detector wand in the room but at no time have I ever been strip searched. A person came up to me while sitting in the lobby with only a Johnny top and Johnny pants.
She led me to one of the rooms finally after waiting the typical one hour or so in the lobby. (They had ginger ale and cookies to take without permission.
There is usually approximately 5 to 10 other people in the lobby. They interviewed all the people in the lobby in these rooms. My interview indicated that I needed inpatient treatment and it was recommended, never forced to accept the recommendations. I was not a court ordered patient so I could leave anytime as I volunteered to be admitted.
Eventually they assist you to one of the 4 floors they chooses for you based on the information gathered from the interview.
Mine was called the Delmonico floor. (Top floor). Witch was geared towards my adult issues. 2 to a room with a shower. Beds were square wood boxed mattress’s and were low to the floor and were screwed to the floor so you couldn’t pick them up.
It’s a huge living room with 2 big screen TV’s on each end. The whole place was not a square space. Nurses station in the middle with several other people like psychiatric social workers roaming around from one room to another checking on patients every 5 minutes it seemed like.
They didn’t come in but shone a flashlight through the halfway closed door. The days were filled with certain coping skills “classes”. All the snacks and drinks and coffee (when available) were free for the taking.
Three pretty good meals with alternative options were brought up from the cafeteria fresh daily. One room was padded and was hardly never used except by patients who wanted quiet time.
One room was for your daily meeting with your assigned psychiatrist and nurse to discuss how you were doing, feeling, etc and med changes (if needed) were ordered then by the psychiatrist. This was a typical day.
They didn’t force you to get out of bed but they urged you to attend the group meetings if you wanted to learn skills that may be helpful in your treatment.
I mostly stayed in my room the first week but I started getting bored so I came out every day and evening. The only thing I didn’t like was that you had to wash and dry your own clothes. A formidable task if there were many bags of clothes in line outside the tiny laundry room (a dryer/washer combination machine) the room was about the size of a closet.
It took 3 weeks to stabilize me. Then they wanted me to attend the partial hospital where you go home every night and came back the next day.
I didn’t last long because I hated CBT and small group talking sessions.
Then eventually I was discharged (my decision) and continued with my psychiatrist out in the community.
That’s a basic experience I went through 3 times during my bad months.
I’m on medication that doesn’t work for me and have a social worker anytime just called when I had to. But she visited and took me out weekly for my iced coffee or trips to the store.
I’m looking for a new psychiatrist more suited to my needs. I enjoyed being in Butlers as it was like a peaceful oasis. Life goes on. UPDATE: 04/20/2023. The psychiatrist I’ve been going to for the past 10 years has just passed away. He was a good mentor. He died in his sleep in Australia while on vacation with his family. May he RIP. Also, a new psychiatrist named Dr Greer took over and I’m happy with him.

I know not everyone shares the same experiences as me, both times were very tough, but my experience still helped me. I hope that whoever goes to Butler will experience the great care that I got even if they don't realize it right away! The food was surprisingly good too by the way. Thank you to all the great staff, doctors, workers, and patients of course too at Butler for helping better my life! Well wishes to everyone reading this review. Things can get better!

I went to Butler in crisis, on a Friday night, when they had no beds. Even though the timing of my arrival wasn’t ideal, every staff member I encountered from the front door to my discharge was incredible. I waited about a day for an inpatient bed, but even while I was waiting, staff made me feel safe and comfortable right away. I ended up on a first floor unit, so one of the less intensive units. I wish I could recall everyone’s names, but I especially want to shoutout my COTAs Deon, Che...

I waited about a day for an inpatient bed, but even while I was waiting, staff made me feel safe and comfortable right away. I ended up on a first floor unit, so one of the less intensive units. I wish I could recall everyone’s names, but I especially want to shoutout my COTAs Deon, Chelsea, and John, and one of my RNs, Sheryl. They are incredible people, and went above and beyond when caring for myself and the other patients. I would not be here if it weren’t for the inpatient program, and I am extremely grateful. If you’re having a hard time and looking for a sign to go here for help, this is it. They will welcome you with open arms, right away.

So…i missed an appointment with my normal doctor and she wouldn’t give me my medicine that I had been taking for 20 years, until I saw her the next day. The medicine kept me happier, sane, and more fit for society. I went to the ER at Butler to get one day of medicine to hold me over until the next day. It was a simple mood stabilizer and he denied me. Did he enjoy making me suffer for another 24 hours? I hope you take a look at his lack of compassion and move onto a better doctor.
